You guys are starting off on your typical medieval DnD world. The kingdom you are from has been involved in a heavy war for the past ten years, however recently it has seems to lulled to a bit of a stalemate. The lines no longer move much, and most fights are mere skirmishes resulting from a penetration in the line, usually resulting in the attacking unit withdrawing back behind their line.

The war has been very costly in terms of resources, and especially life. War orphans and veterans missing limbs are the new norm, and even the king was slain in a major battle three years ago (many are relieved, whereas word was that the king was the aggressor in the name of his own vanity). His son & heir has sworn not to claim the throne until he has brought his people out from this war. As a result, everyone’s way of life has changed.

Everyone has a job to perform, and the Ministry of the Interior sees to it that production is continuous. Those caught not doing their duty are made example of publicly. In addition to their job, all citizens capable of bearing arms are trained to proficiency with spear, and are expected to assemble as militia at a moments notice.

Currency is largely forbidden, and you must be licensed to posses money. Any money found/collected is to be turned into the state. Food and other necessities may be acquired at your local pantry without the need for money. If something you need is unavailable, your name is placed on a list for disbursement once available. Generally resources needed for businesses and production are provided on a schedule, and adjustments made as needed. Those who are licensed to posses money are placed at the top of availability lists. Over-acquisition of resources is monitored and those who abuse the system are also made example of publicly. As a result of these protocols, resources tend to be available as needed.

Women have the additional duty of marrying and producing offspring. If a woman comes of age and has not selected a husband, the state assigns one to her. Should her husband die, she has 6 months to select a new one before one is assigned. Any man who is not married and is of age may be selected as husband without notice.

Adventurers however, are not bound to any of the above. Upon approval from the local lord, citizens are dissolved of those public duties and are in essence are “knighted” and are expected to be of great benefit to the kingdom, make contributions to society, and to the war effort in areas where normal citizens cannot. They are licensed to posses money, to bear arms (beyond the militia weapons permitted the public), and to make the Prince’s Peace (law enforcement).
